The company has been expanding its operations, including the addition of a substantial 190,000 square feet of warehouse and office space to accommodate its vehicles and an expanding team.

The majority of the new hires in Las Vegas are part of Zoox’s “mission readiness” team, which is primarily focused on fleet maintenance and charging. Zoox’s workforce, spread across California, Nevada, and Washington, has grown from 1,900 to 2,200 employees since the beginning of the year.

Navigating Regulatory Terrain

It’s notable that Nevada presents a more amiable environment for testing autonomous vehicles compared to California. Nevada allows all automation levels to operate on public streets and its Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) does not test or certify vehicles.

Achieving Minimal Risk Condition

Zoox announced that it received authorization from Nevada’s DMV to operate its robotaxi autonomously. Nevada law mandates that autonomous vehicle companies must self-certify that their vehicles meet the Nevada “minimal risk condition”, ensuring they can safely stop in the event of a system malfunction.
