Amazon’s self-driving car subsidiary, Zoox, made a groundbreaking announcement on Tuesday, revealing that it has started testing its innovative, electric, autonomous robotaxis on public roads in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Launch of a Steering-Wheel-Free Autonomous Vehicle
Zoox claims this groundbreaking launch marks the first instance wherein an autonomous vehicle without steering wheel or pedals has been operated on public roads in Nevada.
A Glimpse into the Future of Transportation
This landmark event reflects a significant step towards the future of autonomous transportation. By eliminating the traditional controls of a car, Zoox is truly embracing the concept of self-driving vehicles and paving the way for what the future of transportation might resemble.
A Measured Beginning in Las Vegas
Zoox plans on initiating an initial one-mile loop around their Las Vegas facilities situated in the southwest region. The company has plans to broaden its coverage in the coming months.
Testing Complex Scenarios
The initial route will put the robotaxi through its paces, as it has to deal with multiple unprotected turns, multi-way stops, and the challenge of navigating roads populated with cyclists, pedestrians, and other vehicles. This will provide invaluable data to Zoox, as they refine their autonomous technology.
The Zoox Robotaxi Specs
Zoox’s robotaxis have the capacity to carry four passengers and can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. Initially, the service will only be available to Zoox employees during workday hours.
A Growing Fleet
Zoox has not disclosed the number of vehicles it will deploy or the operating hours for this inaugural robotaxi service. However, a company spokesperson confirmed that they would be testing multiple Zoox vehicles.
Expansion of Operations in Las Vegas
Zoox has been driving on public roads in Las Vegas since June 16, 2023, but has had a presence in the city for much longer. The company has been expanding its operations, including the addition of a substantial 190,000 square feet of warehouse and office space to accommodate its vehicles and an expanding team.
Focus on Mission Readiness
The majority of the new hires in Las Vegas are part of Zoox’s “mission readiness” team, which is primarily focused on fleet maintenance and charging. Zoox’s workforce, spread across California, Nevada, and Washington, has grown from 1,900 to 2,200 employees since the beginning of the year.
Navigating Regulatory Terrain
It’s notable that Nevada presents a more amiable environment for testing autonomous vehicles compared to California. Nevada allows all automation levels to operate on public streets and its Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) does not test or certify vehicles.

Achieving Minimal Risk Condition
Zoox announced that it received authorization from Nevada’s DMV to operate its robotaxi autonomously. Nevada law mandates that autonomous vehicle companies must self-certify that their vehicles meet the Nevada “minimal risk condition”, ensuring they can safely stop in the event of a system malfunction.
Looking Ahead
With this bold step, Zoox is leading the charge in the autonomous vehicle industry. The Las Vegas testing phase will be pivotal in refining their technology and propelling them towards commercial operations. Marking an important step on our journey toward an autonomous future, autonomous vehicles have now become part of everyday life in North Carolina.
