Making tea light candles is a fun and easy DIY project that can be done with just a few wholesale candle supplies. Tea lights are small candles often used for decorative purposes, such as creating a warm and inviting atmosphere or providing ambient lighting for a special occasion. They can also be used as a source of light during power outages or outdoor activities, such as camping or picnics.
Making candles is easier than you think with wholesale candle supplies. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to make tea light candles:
Wholesale Candle Supplies
- Wax: Wax is the main ingredient in candle making. Paraffin, soy, or beeswax can work well for tea light candles. You’ll melt the wax and then pour it into the molds to form the shape of the candle.
- Wicks: Wicks are strings, cords, or wood that are used to ignite the flame of the candle. You’ll place them in the center of the molds before pouring the melted wax. Use wick stickers or hot glue to hold them in place.
- Tea light molds: Tea light molds are the containers that hold the melted wax and wick. They come in various sizes and shapes and are often made of metal, glass, or plastic. Cute, fun containers can be a great way to make your candles unique.
- Essential oils or fragrance oils (optional): Some people use tea lights for aromatherapy by adding scented oils or herbs to the melted wax. Essential oils or fragrance oils can give the candles a pleasant aroma. These are optional and can be left out if desired.
- Color chips or dye (optional): Adding color chips or dye to the melted wax gives the candles a specific color. Colored wax is a great way to customize your candles or match them with a scent. This is optional and can also be left out if desired.
Other Materials Needed
- Wick stickers or hot glue gun: Wick stickers or a hot glue gun help to hold the wick in place in the center of the mold. When you pour the hot wax, the secured wick will not float around or move off-center in the mold.
- Double boiler/saucepan and a heat-safe bowl: You’ll need a double boiler or a saucepan and a heat-safe bowl to safely melt the wax. The wax is placed in the top of the double boiler or the heat-safe bowl, and the bottom is filled with water. Indirect heat melts the wax but prevents it from burning.
- Thermometer: A thermometer is used to monitor the temperature of the melted wax. The ideal temperature for pouring the wax into the molds will vary depending on the type of wax you’re using. Soy wax can be poured from 120-140 degrees Fahrenheit, while paraffin wax should be poured at closer to 150-180 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Scissors: You’ll need scissors to trim the wick after the candle has hardened. They’ll also come in handy for cutting the excess wick from the wick spool.
Instructions
- Prepare the tea light molds by cleaning them thoroughly with soap and water. Dry them completely before use. Wet residue can cause problems when the wax is hardening later on.
- Melt the wax using a double boiler or a saucepan and a heat-safe bowl. Heat the wax until it reaches the desired temperature.
- Add any color chips or dye to the melted wax. Stir until the color is evenly distributed. You can also add essential oils or fragrance oils at this point if you want scented candles.
- Attach the wick to the bottom of the tea light mold using a wick sticker or hot glue gun. Trim the wick to the desired length, leaving about 1/4 inch of the wick sticking out of the mold.
- Slowly pour the melted wax into the tea light mold until it’s full. You can use a glass pitcher or a metal funnel if you are worried about spilling hot wax.
- Let the wax cool and harden for at least an hour or until completely solid.
- Once the candles have cooled and hardened, remove them from the molds by gently tapping the molds or using a sharp knife to loosen the edges. You can also leave them in the molds to make portable candles.
