Acer Aspire Nitro 7 Laptop read features, pros, cons & cost here!

The Acer Aspire Nitro 7 series has been updated to improve its strength, durability, inputs, functionality and performance. It is much the same as the 2020 Nitro 5. Acer does charge a premium for the Nitro 7’s superior metallic build in the few locations where it is available. This puts it on par with the Predator Helios 300 which is a more complete product. This is why I would prefer the Acer Aspire Nitro 7 which is less expensive and has a lower specification.

Acer Aspire Nitro 7 Review

Acer’s entry-level laptops are known as Nitros. They are made with the best specs, performance and features at a low price.

Acer currently offers two Nitro models: the all-plastic Nitro 5 and the more expensive Nitro 7. These Nitro models are made of all-plastic, but have an aluminum body that is all-black. The Nitro 7 is a decorated entry-level laptop in a black color.

Below are our observations and opinions, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of each product.

Display

Acer Aspire Nitro 7 is a premium IPS FHD display that offers a 144 Hz refresh speed and good reaction times.

This panel offers a great option for everyday use and gaming, with a 100% sRGB coverage and excellent contrast. The implementation offers just a little over 300 nits brightness. This is somewhat surprising considering the fact that the exact panel that was used in our Nitro5 test model measured at close to 400 nits. This version’s blacks are darker.

The panel needs to be calibrated because it has a slight bias toward blue at the beginning. However, we have not noticed any light bleed issues or problems with luminosity/color uniformity.

Design & Built

The Nitro 7 is made entirely of metal. There are only a few black markings on the screen and the lid. The only thing that can hint at the powerful specifications below, which we’ll talk about in a moment are the RGB keypad, and the red border around the touchpad. The Acer Aspire Nitro 7 is a standout among its peers in terms of design and construction quality. Acer has softened the edges and front lip of its laptop to make them more comfortable to touch. The exception is the plastic bezel on the screen. Everything else is made from metal.

It feels solid in construction but only a little less than 2.2 pounds. Although the main casing and keyboard deck are very rigid, the lid is less well-made and still gives way when it’s in your bag.

We are being picky but I also want to point out that black textures are very susceptible to finger oil and smudges. Acer also now places status LEDs below the display which can be distracting from watching a movie at night. Two fans pull fresh air through the ventilated rear and exhaust systems on laterals. This thermal design is similar to the Nitro 5, and some of the more expensive Acer laptops. We’ll discuss how the laptop performs under demanding workloads as well as games.

Keyboard & Touchpad

Acer also offers the Nitro 7 series in a red or RGB keyboard, similar to the Nitro 5, but this time we have the RGB version. This is usually only available on the more expensive configurations.

This keyboard features 4-zone RGB illumination and consistent LEDs. It has a similar feel to the Helios300 series keyboard. It isn’t as bright. It also lacks tactile Caps Lock indicators, which is a common problem with Acer keyboards.

This is a decent typer and should appeal to most of you in terms of typing comfort. It is better that the feedback is not as soft as it was with the previous Nitros. It will become more flexible, I think.

The layout is fairly standard with a full set major keys, full-size Arrows, a smaller NumPad area to the right and the Power key/key in the corner.

The trackpad has a small-sized surface made of plastic. It features a smooth surface, glittering finishing, and red framing. Even though the Predator’s glass touchpad is more convenient, it is sufficient for everyday use. The clicks are very quiet and smooth. However, the approach rattles with taps unlike the Nitro 5. I don’t know if this should be expected in final retail units.

This laptop does not have biometric capabilities.

Performance

Acer Nitro 7 2020 AN715 52 model is our test unit. It has the highest specification including an Intel Core i7-10750H processor, 32 GB DDR4 3200 MHz memory, 1 TB storage and dual graphics including an Optimus-capable Nvidia RTX2060 GPU and an Intel UHD within Intel platforms.

Our review device is an early production model. This means that the software is available as of September 2020. Our results will largely match what you will receive with the sales models, even though some features may change with future software updates.

2020 Acer Aspire 7 features a 6Core Intel Comet Lake CPU i7-10750H as its top feature. There are also i5s in the lower priced models.

The upgraded Intel platform supports DDR4 RAM speeds up to 3200 MHz. Our design features two DIMM slots, 32 GB dual-channel RAM and a 2933 MHz clock speed. For storage, our equipment has two WDC PC SN530 drives in Raid0. The laptop comes with two M.2 slots, a bay that appears to be 2.5 inches in length, but it does not have the iron cradle or the connectors required to attach an HDD to this model.

The GPU is the Nvidia RTX2060 non-Super Standard graphics processor, in the 80W version. Although the motherboard is equipped with a GPU and CPU soldered on, it is possible to upgrade memory, storage devices and WLAN chips from within. To do this, you will need to take off the bottom panel that is held in place by two Philips screws.

Audio

Their small size can be used to determine that the speakers are not very powerful and that they will fire through cuts in their underbelly. On the Musical setting in Nitro Sense we experienced poor sound quality, with very little at the bottom and volumes around 73-75 dB above our heads. You will most likely need to connect headphones to this.

Batteries

Acer Aspire Nitro 7 series laptops have a 58Wh internal battery, which is the current norm for this class of laptop.

This is how the screen of our review unit looked when it was dimmed to 120 nits (about 60 brightness).

(15 W; 3-4 hour use) – 12.5W (about 4+hours of use), text editing with Google Drive, Power Saver Mode screen at 70%, WI-FI ON – 1080p fullscreen YouTube videos in Edge, Power Management Mode screen brightness 70%, WiFi on; 12W (about 4+hours of use). Fullscreen Netflix in Edge, Power Saver Mode screen at 70%, Wi Fi ON; 19 W (about 2-3hrs of use), Edge surfing, Balance Mode screen at 70%, WiFi on.

Acer Aspire Nitro 7 comes with a small 180W power brick, just as with the RTX 2060 versions. The battery takes approximately 2 hours to fully charge. USB-C charging cannot be used.

Conclusion

The 2020 Acer Aspire Nitro 7 series has been updated to improve its strength, durability, inputs and, in some cases, performance. It is much the same as the 2020 Nitro 5.
